TDU RECOGNIZES NUCPP

Pension Warriors,

Thank you to Mr. Ken Paff, TDU President, who spoke recently at our NUCPP 3rd Annual Meeting and posted an acknowledgment of our continuing work in the TDU Newsletter. We appreciate the pension work initiated by TDU and their continuing efforts to protect the benefits of active workers.

NUCPP’S NEW MISSION: PROTECT AND EXPAND SOCIAL SECURITY

  •  NUCPP’S NEW MISSION: PROTECT AND EXPAND SOCIAL SECURITY

    • The National United Committee to Protect Pensions (NUCPP) held its 3rd Annual Meeting in Memphis on October 4, 2023.
After the MEPRA law (aimed at cutting pensions) was passed in 2014, the NUCPP was formed by a grassroots movement resulting from threatened cuts to multiemployer pension plans ranging from 50%-70%. As TDU initiated the pension movement, Alex Adams and Mike Walden began the grassroots movement, eventually becoming the NUCPP. The Pension Rights Center, IBT, and others were also very effective in the pension fight.

After hundreds of trips to Washington, DC by the retirees, and thousands of emails and letters, the multiemployer pension plans were saved when President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act/Butch Lewis Act in March 2021, affecting more than 10.1 million Americans. It was a historical time for retirees and active workers.

Although our pensions have been saved, the NUCPP expanded its Mission Statement to include watching over retirement security issues, including pensions, Social Security, and Medicare. We have partnered with the Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA), Pension Rights Center (PRC), AFL-CIO, IBT, and others with the same goals to protect and improve our hard-earned benefits.
