SUBJECT: CREATE A ‘my Social Security’ ACCOUNT NOW!
Pension/Retirement Security Warriors,
There is so much news and information to watch, but this is important.
BEFORE APRIL 1, 2025- YOU NEED TO HAVE AN ONLINE ‘MY SOCIAL SECURITY’ ACCOUNT TO AVOID HAVING TO FIND A SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE THAT IS STILL OPEN TO HANDLE SEVERAL MATTERS:
If there is an issue with your social security check or you have a question about your account
If you need to change the direct deposit information
If you need necessary tax information
To see how much your Medicare premium is
To apply for social security benefits
Anything else that would come up that you need help with regarding your social security
True Story: Several weeks ago, my mom needed access to her social security account for tax reasons. We attempted to set up an online account. We had problems setting it up, so they mailed her (via USPS) instructions on setting up the account, including an activation code. I followed the directions and put in the activation code, and it said to provide extra security, they needed to send another activation code - either by phone call, mail, or text. I couldn’t imagine that she was going to get a person to call her, and fortunately, she had a cell phone, so we were able to get another activation code. After many steps, I opened the account for her
Point of the story: I am very computer savvy, but know many people aren’t. Many don’t have a computer or cell phone to get a text. NOW is the time to try to set up your account, and if you need help, enlist the help of a family member or someone familiar with computers. ALSO, tell your family and friends to set up a ‘my Social Security’ Account by clicking https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. If you already have an account, I recommend logging into it to ensure you have all the necessary information, such as the correct login name and password.Let me be clear. I am 100% for ridding Social Security of any fraud. This is not about that. It is about making sure that you can access your records, if necessary, without having to 1) find an open social security office and 2) standing in line for hours to be waited on, AND JUST IN CASE THE SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM EVER CRASHES, you may want to printout your information when you access it.
If you never need this account, GREAT, but I hope you use this suggestion, open the account, and share this information with others!
